Lesson 2: Secwépemc Alphabet

Overview

Welcome back to the Basics of Secwepemctsín (the Secwépemc language). This lesson will build on your ability to introduce yourself in Secwepemctsín, as well as learn the sounds of the Secwépemc alphabet to help you begin to read Secwepemctsín.

We encourage you to be brave and try speaking as much as possible; making mistakes is a big part of learning any new language. You may not get the pronunciation on the first try. Even fluent speakers get their pronunciation wrong sometimes. As with learning any language, practice is essential to success.

We are now onto the sounds of the letters in the Secwépemc alphabet. You will notice that it consists of Latin-based characters. Most sounds are similar to the same English alphabetic characters, but some have completely different sounds. Also, note that the double letter characters in the Secwépemc alphabet count as one sound rather than two.
